Are you struggling to find a worthy wedding dress that fits your budget? Believe it or not, it’s out there for you!

In my research, online wedding dress shopping is significantly cheaper than in-person. Making such a big purchase online can seem scary, but you will find the prices (and often return policies) are much less scary than in-person bridal boutiques. I learned this the hard way (so you don’t have to). I tried on approximately 50 wedding dresses in-person (and loved every minute of it!) I absolutely recommend going in-person to zero in on your style. However, my fear of buying online caused me to just settle on a dress that was almost what I wanted, but not really what I wanted. I tried to return it, but they only would take it back for half the value. I ended up finding my dream wedding dress online, and cutting my losses. My dream dress was out there, I just had to look in the right place!

Disclaimer: make sure the site is legit! Double-check to make whichever site you’re viewing a dress on is legitimate and secure. You’ll also want to read the seller’s return policy. Often if you order in a standard size, the dresses are returnable and refundable.

Keeping it Classy

At some Catholic churches, there may be formal guidelines on dress. They often mention things such as having thighs covered, keeping backs covered below the shoulder blades, avoiding noticeable cleavage, and having some sort of shoulder covering. All of these dresses below will likely fit into any guidelines you would potentially receive.

Many mixed emotions may arise when the topic of modesty comes up. If you have ever felt ashamed of your body, or been given the impression that you should, “Cover it up,” because your womanliness is viewed as a negative thing, I’m so sorry that’s been your experience! I have been there; and, I’m here to tell you that the Church teaches your body is such a wonderful gift! We are body and soul. In fact, our bodies - not just our souls - are Temples of the Holy Spirit. Our bodies are so good, God is going to resurrect them! What modesty means is, like any great gift, we take good care of it.

Here’s something the Church has to say about how we dress, “Modesty protects the intimate center of the person… It guides how one looks at others and behaves toward them in conformity with the dignity of persons… Modesty protects the mystery of persons and their love. It encourages patience and moderation in loving relationships… Modesty is decency. It inspires one's choice of clothing.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church paragraphs 2521-22, emphasis added).

At the center of everything the Church actually teaches is love. Modesty is a virtue that protects and uplifts your dignity, your love, your relationships. Now I know you’re here to look at wedding dresses, so I’ll just leave you with a couple of simple phrases that help me feel confident when I am choosing what to wear.

  1. Is it classy?

  2. Dress in such a way that draws attention to you as a whole person.
